Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said on Monday that the “Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved in one day,” in response to US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s frequent claims that he could end the war within 24 hours if re-elected.
Republican candidate Trump did not go into details and said that if there had been a “real president” in the United States at the time, who was respected by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moscow would not have invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
“I will resolve this war between Putin and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky as president-elect before I take office on January 20th. I will have resolved this war,” Trump said last week during a debate with Democratic President Joe Biden.
Trump added that he would resolve it “quickly, before I am inaugurated.”
American voters will go to the polls on November 5 to elect the next president to a four-year term.
Impact of the US elections on Russia
The outcome of the election is important to Russia, despite its attempts to downplay it, because it will determine the extent of Washington’s commitment to continuing to support Ukraine against Moscow, such as by supplying it with advanced American weapons.
“The Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved in one day,” Nebenzia said at a news conference to mark the start of Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council in July.
In response, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told Reuters that “President Trump is the most effective statesman and negotiator in history and will resolve this conflict when elected.”
The Kremlin has said that any peace deal with Ukraine proposed by a future Trump administration must reflect the realities on the battlefield, but that Putin remains open to negotiations.
