A preliminary investigation into war crimes has been launched by its judicial authorities Ukrainian after the information that the Russian forces executed three Ukrainian prisoners of war, the attorney general's office announced.
According to Kyiv, the incident occurred this month near the village of Robotine, in the Zaporizhia region. Footage of the videotaped execution was posted on social networking sites.
Reuters was unable to verify the footage, which shows three unarmed figures standing still and then collapsing under fire.
Russia has not commented on this matter.
“This is another case of a serious violation of international humanitarian law regarding the treatment of prisoners of war by the aggressor country,” the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
On December 3, Ukraine accused Russia of a war crime after another video was released on social media sites showing multiple soldiers shooting two Ukrainians as they surrendered and walked out of their trench. Last March a captured Ukrainian soldier was shot and killed after being heard shouting “Glory to Ukraine”, a phrase that has taken on special meaning and has been used by Ukrainians as a daily greeting since the start of the war.
