The Ukrainian government is putting pressure on that of USA to supply its armed forces with longer-range missiles for HIMARS systems that they recently received, Fedir Venislavski, a member of the defense affairs committee of the Ukrainian parliament, said on Wednesday.
Today the Ukrainian army it has missiles with a range of 70 kilometers. The US has in its arsenal missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 300 to 500 kilometers. Kiev troops use Tochka-U missiles, with a range of 120 km, to hit targets over longer distancesbut of Soviet design arms these are not so accurate.
The eventual delivery of such missiles has key importance, since it would allow the Ukrainian military to target the bridge over the Kerch Strait, which connects the mainland Russia with the annexed Crimean peninsula.
As the Athens News Agency reports, this bridge, worth several billion dollars, is some 260 kilometers from the fronts. Is strategic importance because through it they are supplied Russian troops.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Kiev’s declared intention to strike the bridge “terrorism”. However, he pointed out that it is adequately protected against missile attacks.
Kiev’s request for missiles with a large effective range has also raised concerns in Washington, particularly that the Ukrainian armed forces could use US-made weapons systems to strike targets deep inside Russian territory, further escalating the armed conflict.
Yesterday Wednesday at least five civilians were killed in the city of Mykolayiv (south), according to Kirill Tymoshenko, an official of the Ukrainian presidency. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Mykolaiv was hit, but claimed that two command centers were hit and killed somewhere 350 Ukrainian military personnel.
The city of Lugansk, the capital of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of the same name, was hit repeatedly by HIMARS systems yesterday, pro-Russian separatist spokesman Andrey Marochko said via Telegram.
Serhii Haidai, the head of the Ukrainian civil-military administration in the Luhansk region, said for his part that weapons depots were targeted.
