The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Ukraine, the Associated Press reported today. “We are ready to see him here,” Zelensky said in an interview with the news agency.
Xi has not spoken to Zelensky since last February when the Russia invaded Ukraine, yet China last month released a 12-point plan for “a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.” Xi discussed the conflict with his “dear friend”, Russian President Vladimir Putinduring last week’s official visit to Moscow, even though the talks showed no progress toward ending the war.
China’s proposal includes a call for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, the US maintained a negative attitude regarding the proposal, given that the China has refused to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The US argues that a ceasefire at this time would secure Russian territorial gains and give Putin’s army more time to reorganize, APE reports.
Ukraine has welcomed China’s diplomatic involvement, but Zelensky has said he will consider peace arrangements only if Russian troops withdraw from Ukrainian soil.
