Ukraine: Zelensky invites Putin to a meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky summoned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday to meet with him and seek a solution to the crisis, the Associated Press reported.

The Ukrainian president is facing a sharp escalation of violence in and around Russian-backed rebel-held territory, with the West issuing increasingly serious warnings that Russia is planning to invade.

“I do not know what the president of the Russian Federation wants, so I propose a meeting,” Zelensky said at the Munich Security Conference, where he also met with US Vice President Kamala Harris. Zelensky said Russia could choose the venue for the talks.

“Ukraine will continue to pursue only the diplomatic route for the sake of a peaceful settlement,” he added. There was no immediate response from the Kremlin.

Zelensky spoke hours after separatist leaders in eastern Ukraine ordered a “general mobilization” on Saturday, and Western leaders issued increasingly serious warnings that a Russian invasion of Ukraine appeared imminent.

Germany and Austria have told their citizens to leave Ukraine, while German airline Lufthansa has canceled flights to Kiev and Odessa, a Black Sea port that could be a key target in an invasion.
