The Ukrainian ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Sergiy Kyslytsya, asked the General Assembly to vote in favor of a resolution that calls, in part, for the immediate cessation of hostilities by the Russian Federation.
The resolution, which is not binding, was co-signed by about 90 other member countries, including the United States.
The text also regrets the dire humanitarian consequences since the invasion of Russia and reaffirms the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and its internationally recognized borders.
“Tomorrow marks a month since the invasion,” Kyslytsya said, “a month since the lives of Ukrainians were divided into ‘two parts’ – a peaceful past and the now, filled with “war, suffering, death and destruction”, he added. to the General Assembly.
“Thousands” of Ukrainians are dead, he said, and “they died because Russia decided to attack – attack Ukraine, attack peace, attack us all.”
At least 902 civilians have been killed and 1,459 injured since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Sunday.
“In a nutshell, it has already reached the level of a humanitarian disaster”, pointed out the ambassador.
The Ukrainian described citizens “starving” and “killed in their attempt to flee” and cities “demolished”, with neighboring countries on their borders in an attempt to support new refugees.
Kyslytsya said alignment with the resolution “will send a powerful message aimed at contributing to advancing humanitarian action on the ground.”
Russia asks countries not to support the text
Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzya called on General Assembly member countries to block the humanitarian resolution put forward by Ukraine which he said was presented “in the context of anti-Russian efforts or our Western counterparts”.
Nebenzya will separately reintroduce a Russian-backed humanitarian resolution to the Security Council for a vote.
“If our Western colleagues on the security council were really concerned about the humanitarian situation on the ground, they have the opportunity to show that and vote on our draft humanitarian resolution in the security council,” he highlighted during his speech.
