Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN calls on the Security Council to “stop the war”

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya urged other UN Security Council member countries to “stop the war” in Ukraine. The statement was given during an emergency meeting at the collegiate.

In the early hours of Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, controlled by pro-Russian separatists, which he declared independent this week. Explosions and gunfire are heard across the country, according to witnesses.

“It is the responsibility of this body to stop the war. So I ask each of you to do everything possible to stop the war,” Kyslytsya told the council, before turning to the Russian ambassador to the UN and asking: “or should I play the video with your president declaring war? ”

The Russian ambassador replied: “this is not called a war, it is called a special military operation in Donbas”.

Kyslytsya also said that “it is too late” for a ‘de-escalation’ of the conflict. “It is too late, my dear colleagues, to talk about de-escalation,” he said. “The Russian president has declared war,” he added.

The ambassador cited the UN letter and the stipulation that only peace-loving states would be admitted to the Security Council, and then asked the Russian ambassador to relinquish his role as chairman of the collegiate.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya defended Russia’s military operation and denied it was a “war”, blaming Ukraine for current tensions.
