Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov will address the meeting of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) defense ministers on Wednesday, a senior US defense official said. His speech and remarks were previously recorded, the official said.
The meeting in Brussels will focus on comparing assessments of the Ukraine crisis with other NATO allies and partners and how the organization sees “where Russia’s military operations are,” according to the insider.
The ministers will also examine what this invasion means not only now, but also “with the implications for the strategic environment and security for the transatlantic alliance going forward,” the official said.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in the Belgian capital and will also attend the meeting.
“We cannot enter”
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky left in his speech on Tuesday (15) in the Canadian parliament a clearer hint that he does not expect his country to join NATO anytime soon. In the speech, Zelensky appeared to stray even further from what was until recently seen as Ukraine’s key ambition.
“For years we have been hearing about how the door is supposedly open [para a adesão à OTAN], but now we hear that we cannot enter. And it’s true, and it should be recognized,” said the Ukrainian.
“I’m glad our people are starting to understand this and trust themselves and our partners who help us,” he added.
Ukraine’s desire to join NATO and its status as a partner in the organization are among the reasons Russian President Vladimir Putin used to launch what he calls Russia’s “special military operation” against the neighboring country.
