On the ninth day of clashes, Russian troops continue to surround the Ukrainian capital, and center of power, Kiev. In an interview with CNNMoldova’s honorary consul in São Paulo, Flavio Bitelman, said he fears a generalized war, as a result of a possible fall of Ukraine.
“I’m very afraid that if Ukraine falls, we’re going to have a third world war,” Bitelman said. And he added: “I think it’s very difficult for the world to see the world on the internet, the way we’re seeing the Russians attacking, and just sit back.”
After Ukraine, Moldova also officially applied for membership of the European Union. According to the consul, the country was already working on formalizing the request and accelerated the procedure due to current circumstances.
“We are working to really become a part of Europe, but the fear of an attack is always a great danger,” he said.
refugee crisis
According to data from the United Nations (UN), at least one million people have left Ukraine in a week since the beginning of the war.
Bitelman said the plight of these people is a concern for Moldova. “We are focused on welcoming Ukrainians and other people who live in Ukraine and need to leave in a hurry.” According to him, the authorities are not demanding a passport and the refugees are being taken in in makeshift shelters.
Also according to the honorary consul, at least 110,000 refugees have entered Moldova since Russia invaded Ukraine, with 55,000 remaining in the country.
