Ukraine’s president imposes martial law and urges people to calm down

In a short video posted on social media on Thursday (24), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had imposed martial law in the country and urged the population to remain calm.

“Dear Ukrainian citizens, this morning President Putin announced a special military operation in Donbas. Russia has carried out attacks against our military infrastructure and our border guards. Explosions were heard in many cities in Ukraine. We are introducing martial law throughout the territory of our country,” he declared.

Shortly before releasing the message, Zelensky spoke by phone with US President Joe Biden. “A few minutes ago I had a conversation with President Biden. The US has already begun to pool international support.”

The Ukrainian president asked people for calm and confidence in Ukrainian forces. “Today each of you must remain calm. Stay home if you can. We are working. The army is working. The entire defense and security sector is up and running. No panic. We are strong. We are ready for anything,” he concluded.

large-scale invasion

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“Ukraine’s peaceful cities are under attack. This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and win,” she wrote on social media.

For Kuleba, the “world can and must stop Putin” and “the time to act is now”. The minister said that tough new sanctions should be announced against Russia, with the aim of isolating the country “in every way”.

In a speech early on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, controlled by pro-Russian separatists, which he declared independent this week.

“Confrontations between Ukrainian and Russian forces are inevitable, it’s just a matter of time,” declared the Russian leader. “Circumstances demand decisive action from Russia. We cannot tolerate threats from Ukraine.”
