Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that Russian forces were preparing to bomb the city of Odessa on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast.
“Rockets against Odessa? This will be a war crime,” he said in a televised speech.
On Sunday, an exit crossing point for civilians trying to escape from the Irpin district, west of Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, was attacked. International media were filming at the scene when what appears to have been an artillery shell landed. At the time, a stream of people was passing through the checkpoint. There are no immediate details of casualties yet.
The governor of the region where Mariupol is located also confirmed the information, saying that the evacuation of civilians was scheduled to start at 07:00, Brasília time.
On Saturday (5), the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha, both in Ukraine, was postponed to this Sunday (6) due to a breach of the Russian ceasefire. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which is the guarantor of the evacuation of civilians, informed the postponement.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Sunday that “several attacks on health centers” in Ukraine had been carried out. The entity also said that it is investigating other military offensives against hospitals in the country.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media that the attacks had caused several deaths and injuries.
“Attacks on health facilities or workers violate medical neutrality and are violations of international humanitarian law,” he said.
In his brief post, Tedros did not mention Russia by name, which began an invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
