Ukraine’s second largest city resists; “Confident that we will defeat them”, says mayor

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov told CNN who is “absolutely confident” that his city will defeat Russian forces. Under the siege of constant Russian bombing, Ukraine’s second-largest city still resists and could live on, Terekhov said on Tuesday.

Heavy artillery bombardment, air strikes and fires in residential neighborhoods have left the northeastern city devastated, but it has not yet fallen into Russian hands and will “resist” thanks to the Ukrainian army, Terekhov insisted.

Last week, Russian forces attacked residential areas in Kharkiv, hitting schools, shops, hospitals, apartment buildings and churches. Terekhov said the city, which has 1.5 million people, needs everything: food, medicine and warm clothes.

Kharkiv has been one of the most bombed areas in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion. Terekhov has called the bombing of civilian districts an act of “genocide”.

“What else can it be? There is no military infrastructure or military installations in these areas. Strikes are happening in kindergartens, schools, maternity hospitals, clinics,” Terekhov said.

“This is not an accident. I can understand when there is an accidental attack. But when hundreds of civilian buildings are affected, this is not an accident. This is a targeted attack.”

The Kremlin has denied targeting civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, despite several documented casualties.
