The Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnik, criticized the decision of German Chancellor Olaf Solz to rule out any possibility of visiting Kyiv until further notice.
German Foreign Minister Analena Berbok and two members of the lower house of the federal parliament, the Bundestag, plan to visit the Ukrainian capital to express German support for the country where Russia’s attack continues.
However, Mr. Soltz stressed on the German public television network ZDF on Monday that the fact that the federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier was recently declared undesirable by Kyiv does not allow him to make the trip.
“Being overwhelmed with indignation does not sound like the attitude of a political leader,” Mr Melnik said in a statement to the German news agency. “We are talking about the most barbaric war of extermination since the Nazi invasion of Ukraine, not a kindergarten,” he added.
In Solz’s view, it is unacceptable for his country, which provides military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, to learn that the head of state cannot visit Kyiv.
For his part, Melnik – avoiding referring to Steinmeier – assured that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to welcome German Chancellor Soltz in Kyiv.
He added, however, that Ukraine “is not so much interested in symbolic visits as in the implementation by the ruling coalition of the Bundestag’s demand for the rapid delivery of heavy weapons and the fulfillment of promises made.”
The ambassador also criticized the fact that no ammunition has yet been found for the Gepard anti-aircraft armor that Germany promised to send to his country.
