The Ukrainian army today called on the mothers of Russian soldiers captured on Ukrainian soil to come and look for them, while Kyiv claims to have captured dozens of prisoners since the beginning of the invasion of the country by Moscow.
“A decision has been made to hand over the captured Russian soldiers to their mothers if they come to look for them in Ukraine, in Kyiv,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It released phone numbers and an email that mothers can use to obtain information about their sons being held in Ukraine.
If the detention of their sons is confirmed, Russian women are advised to travel to Poland and then enter Ukraine through a border crossing.
“You will be welcomed and escorted back to Kyiv, where your son will be handed over to you,” the Ukrainian ministry said.
“Unlike Putin’s fascists, we Ukrainians are not waging war against their mothers and their captive children,” he added.
During the conflict between Moscow and Chechen separatists in the 1990s and 2000s, many young Russian conscripts were sent to the front and some were taken prisoner.
The mothers of the soldiers had then mobilized to bring them back alive or to bring back their corpses, without hesitation to go there, a movement that had sparked anti-war protests in Russia.
