Ukrainian counter-offensive will happen ‘soon’, says Zelensky

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that his country would soon launch a counteroffensive on its own territory against Russian forces.

The Ukrainian president also said he was sure the West would provide Kiev with modern warplanes if his country was successful on the battlefield, citing past examples that have led Ukraine to receive new types of military aid.

“That is why I am sure that we will soon have aircraft. Because soon we will launch an offensive, and after it I am sure that we will receive planes. I would prefer it the other way around, as it would be easier for us, but it is how it is, and we are grateful for everything,” said Zelensky. “We need them. We really need them, ”he said.

Zelensky also rejected Moscow’s claim that Kiev tried to attack the Kremlin. Earlier, Russia accused Ukraine of a failed attempt to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin in a drone strike on the Kremlin compound in central Moscow and threatened to retaliate.

Speaking at a press conference in Finland, the newest member of the Western military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Zelensky, said his concern was to defend Ukraine’s own cities and towns against the Russian invasion, which began nearly 15 years ago. months.

“We don’t attack Putin or Moscow, we fight on our turf,” Zelensky said.

Asked why it was in Russia’s interest to accuse Ukraine of trying to assassinate Putin, Zelensky said: “It’s very simple. Russia has no victories. He (Putin) can no longer motivate his society and cannot simply send his troops to their death anymore… now he needs to somehow motivate his people to move forward”.
