Ukrainian crisis: In Poland with US military planes

Two US military planes were spotted landing at a Polish airport on Monday morning (7/2) and more are expected later in the day. These aircraft carry the bulk of the extra troops that the US president has Joe Biden ordered them to be developed in Europe due to the Ukrainian crisis.

Biden has ordered the deployment of nearly 3,000 troops to Eastern Europe to protect NATO’s eastern wing from a possible Russian attack on Ukraine. Russia, which has deployed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, has denied Western allegations that it is planning an invasion.

About 1,700 troops, mostly from the 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, will be deployed in Poland, while 1,000 troops, based in Germany, will be heading east to Romania.

Most of the troops will arrive today

The commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, arrived on Saturday, and a military source said most of the troops would arrive today.

After two military transport planes were spotted landing at Zesuf airport in southeastern Poland this morning, an airport employee told Reuters three more were expected. A Polish military spokesman said more planes were expected today, but did not say how many.
