Ukrainian crisis: Russian ambassador summoned to Foreign Ministry in The Hague

The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Dutch Foreign Ministry in The Hague yesterday, Tuesday, after Moscow recognized the separatist regions in Ukraine and announced the deployment of Russian troops in Ukraine, the ministry confirmed today.

On Tuesday, “the Netherlands did indeed summon the Russian ambassador,” a foreign ministry spokesman said in an email to AFP.

“The Netherlands has made it clear to the Russian ambassador that Russia’s recent actions are unacceptable and will have serious consequences,” she said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s designation of his army as a “peacekeeping force” to justify its entry into the separatist territories of eastern Ukraine has been described as “nonsense” by the US ambassador to the United Nations.

Austria and Britain also summoned their Russian ambassadors on Tuesday.

The 27 EU member states also unanimously approved a package of sanctions against Russia yesterday.

“With this set of sanctions, it should be absolutely clear to Russia that its recent offensive is unacceptable,” Dutch Foreign Minister Vopke Hookstra tweeted on Tuesday night. “A new escalation will not go unanswered. The Netherlands, the EU and NATO support Ukraine and will continue to do so.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte are holding a seminar in The Hague today on the future strategic vision of NATO. Stoltenberg will participate online after the cancellation of his visit due to the crisis in Ukraine.
