Ukrainian crisis: “Russian invasion has begun, Putin has chosen to confront”

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already begun and therefore Britain will impose sanctions on Moscow, a British minister said today as Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired an emergency meeting to manage the Ukrainian crisis.

Putin’s actions in Ukraine show that he has chosen confrontation with the West instead of dialogue.

“We have always preferred dialogue and we still do, but it is clear from Putin’s actions that he has chosen confrontation over dialogue,” the British minister told BBC TV, according to the Athens News Agency.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the deployment of troops to the two breakaway regions of the east. Of Ukraineafter previously recognizing their independence yesterday, escalating the crisis, which in the West is in danger of turning into a generalized war.

“One can conclude that the invasion of Ukraine has begun. “The Russians, President Putin, have decided to attack Ukraine’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”said British Health Minister Sajid Javid to Sky News.

“We will impose sanctions, as we have said we will always do,” he said.

Britain has threatened to cut off Russian companies’ access to US dollars and British pounds by depriving them of the ability to raise capital in London.

London has not yet clarified to whom the sanctions will be imposed, but has promised that the Russian oligarchs will have nowhere to hide.

Johnson has indicated that the targets will include Russian banks.

According to Javid, the sanctions will be announced in parliament by the prime minister.

“I am convinced that sanctions against those responsible for this blatant violation of international law will be as targeted as possible,” Javid told BBC radio, noting that London would continue to support Ukraine with military equipment.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created a situation as serious as the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, when a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union brought the world to the brink of nuclear war,” he said.
