Ukraine’s defense minister said on Friday that Berlin’s reluctance to supply weapons to Kiev encouraged Russian aggression and suggested that Moscow could hope to revive the German Democratic Republic in East Germany.
Unlike some of its NATO allies, Germany does not supply weapons to Kiev during its confrontation with Russia, which has amassed troops near Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal also reported last week that Berlin had refused to issue licenses for weapons of German origin to be exported from Estonia to Ukraine.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told parliament that Kiev appreciated Germany’s assistance in treating wounded soldiers. Berlin has said it will send a field hospital and 5,000 helmets to Ukraine.
“But we do not accept (Germany) ‘s official position on arms procurement and other decisions that undermine Europe’ s security and de facto encourage the attacker,” he said.
“We have warned our Western partners that the Kremlin’s goal is not so much Ukraine as undermining NATO and the EU.”
Russia has pushed for demands to redesign post-Cold War security arrangements in Europe.
Reznikov said Russia may want to raise the issue of the restoration of the German Democratic Republic, which was founded in eastern Germany in 1949, ruled by communists and dominated from Moscow until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. German reunification followed in 1990.
“The restoration of the GDR is a logical continuation of the Russian demands that have already been made,” he said.
