Ukrainian defense says territory suffered 80 attacks on Tuesday

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry says that as of 9 pm local time in Ukraine, territories under Ukrainian control had been attacked 80 times by the self-declared pro-Russian republics of Luhansk and Donetsk.

The information comes from the Ministry of Defense’s latest statement on the ceasefire violations in eastern Ukraine. Of the 80 incidents, 58 involved weapons prohibited by the Minsk accords, which stipulate that heavy weapons must not be within 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) of front lines.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the Minsk Accords “no longer exist”, adding: “What is there to implement if we recognize these two entities?”

The Defense Ministry recorded 84 ceasefire violations on Monday. As part of Tuesday’s attacks, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said one soldier was killed and six others were wounded.

According to the ministry, the town of Shchastya – near Luhansk – suffered some of the heaviest bombing.

The ministry went on to accuse the Russian-backed separatists of deploying heavy weapons “within the settlements to provoke the Ukrainian defenders to return fire”.
