Ukraine’s government wants to become a member state of NATO immediately, in other words not to implement the previous plan for the country’s slow and gradual admission to the organization, which was drawn up before Russia’s military invasion on February 24, a Ukrainian government official said yesterday official.
“Only direct integration” is the option that Kyiv accepts, stressed the Ukrainian government’s vice-president responsible for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanyshina, in Ukrainska Pravda.
Ukraine has already adopted many practices of the military alliance, Ms. Stefanyshina argued, adding that her country’s military is now war-experienced, which is not the case for the armed forces of several other North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries.
