Ukrainian Foreign Minister: Russians plan pseudo-independence referendum in Kherson

The Russians want to stage a referendum on the creation of an independent democracy in Kherson, a city near Crimea, which they took control of on March 3, as several Ukrainian officials accused on Saturday.

“After the 2014 scenario, the Russians are desperately trying to organize a fake ‘referendum’ for a fake ‘people’s democracy’ in Kherson,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

He referred to the referendum held in Crimea in 2014 after the annexation of the peninsula to the Russian Federation, which is considered illegal by Kyiv and the West.

“Given that there is no popular support, this will be entirely directed,” he predicted, calling for “severe sanctions” to be imposed on Russia if that happened.

“At the moment, the invaders are calling on the deputies of the regional council to propose to them to cooperate and create an ‘independent democracy,'” Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian parliament’s human rights ombudswoman, told the Telegram.

Kherson is the first major city to be occupied by Russian forces since their invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
