Ukrainian Foreign Minister: ‘There is no danger of attack in Kyiv at the moment’

“There is no danger of an attack on Kyiv at the moment,” Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastirsky told AFP today, more than 100 days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“There is no concentration of Russian and Belarusian troops near the border with Belarus (more than 150 km north of Kiev), but we are aware that all scenarios are possible in the future,” Monastirsky said, wearing a military sweatshirt. and sitting in front of the Ukrainian flag in a large room.

“Preparations are under way” around the Ukrainian capital, the minister said, including “preparing a line of defense and training soldiers” to protect Kiev from a possible attack.

Stating that he was relatively optimistic about the current situation in the capital, the interior minister, however, noted that “any part of Ukraine could be targeted by rockets, including Kiev”, including the “presidential administration area and the historic center”.

Kyiv was the main target of the Russian army during the first days of the Russian invasion in late February, occupying several positions around the Ukrainian capital in March, but Russian forces never managed to enter the city. Russian forces withdrew from the area in early April and focused on attacking Donbas and southern Ukraine.

“There is no statute of limitations for the war crimes attributed by Kyiv to Russian soldiers,” Monastirsky said. “Every time we find these monsters,” they will be held accountable to Ukrainian justice, he said.

According to him, “288 people have been identified and are suspected at this stage” for war crimes, said the Ukrainian minister.

“We are working in parallel to repatriate our wounded prisoners of war in Russia,” he said.
