Ukrainian governor says withdrawal from humanitarian route is ending

The city of Sumy has suffered heavy attacks in recent days and is almost isolated from the rest of the country. On Monday night, 21 people were killed in the city in an airstrike.

“Citizens are currently being evacuated by their own vehicles. The organized column set out for the town of Romny. There are private cars. They are accompanied by a Red Cross car,” Zhyvytsky said on his Telegram channel.

“After 7:30 pm, the checkpoint closes and it will be impossible to leave Sumy. The ceasefire regime was agreed until 9 pm,” explained the head of the regional administration.

Stop fire

A ceasefire allowed five humanitarian corridors to be opened for civilian evacuation. In addition to the capital Kiev, the runners were formed by Sumy, Cherhihiv, Kharkiv and Mariupol.

Russian forces said they halted attacks on route locations around 9 am local time. However, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said on Twitter on Tuesday that Russian forces had bombed an evacuation route for civilians stranded in Mariupol. Russia has not commented on the accusation.

The head of human rights of the United Nations (United Nations), Michelle Bachelet, called on Tuesday that the imprisoned civilians be able to leave safely. “I repeat my urgent appeal for a peaceful end to hostilities,” she declared.
