Ukrainian intelligence says Russian troops insufficient for wide-ranging invasion

The latest Ukrainian intelligence report says the country’s government believes that the current level of Russian troops in the border region is not enough to carry out a full-scale invasion.

“The Russian military contingent near the Ukrainian border is insufficient to carry out a successful large-scale armed aggression against Ukraine,” reads the intelligence report obtained by the CNN.

The total number of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border has risen to more than 148,000, including more than 126 ml ground troops, according to the report. The figures are in line with recent US reports on the strength of the Russian army threatening Ukraine.

According to the new Ukrainian intelligence assessment, shared exclusively with the CNNthere are currently 87 Russian battalion tactical groups on constant alert around Ukraine, 53 more than the groups normally located in the region.

Recognizing this inability, the report said that “Russia is focused on destabilizing Ukraine’s internal situation,” including through the use of economic and energy tools, as well as cyber attacks.

Ukraine’s intelligence report also detailed what it called a “creeping Russian occupation of Belarus”, suggesting that Russia continues to bolster its air and missile forces in the country, which borders Russia and Ukraine. The report said Belarus is now “a theater of operations” that Russia can “use to expand its aggression in Eastern Europe”.
