Ukrainian negotiator: Next round of Ukraine-Russia talks in Turkey

LAST UPDATE: 20:50

Delegations from Russia and Ukraine will meet in Turkey on Monday for a new round of face-to-face talks, David Arakhamia, one of the Ukrainian negotiators, said today.

“During the talks today, via teleconference, it was decided to hold the next round, face-to-face, in Turkey, from March 28 to 30,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Russia’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, has also announced that a new round of talks will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, without elaborating on the location.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. Today, in a video message recorded for a show, aimed at raising money in support of Ukraine, which was broadcast by the Polish television network TVP, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that he demands the implementation of a “ceasefire and “Complete withdrawal of Russian troops” from Ukrainian territory.

A round of private talks between Russia and Ukraine was held on March 10, in Turkey, in Antalya, between the foreign ministers, without reaching tangible results.

Since then, the talks have continued via video conference and were deemed “difficult” by both camps.

Turkey supports the unity and national sovereignty of Ukraine, the Turkish president’s spokesman told Al Jazeera today.

Ibrahim Kalin told Qatari TV that the war in Ukraine was not justified, but that channels of communication with Russia should remain open.

“Turkey is trying to end the war in Ukraine through dialogue with Moscow and Kyiv,” he said.

It is noted that in addition to Turkey, Israel has developed initiatives to find a diplomatic solution to the Russo-Ukrainian war. During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken described Israel’s efforts to mediate an end to the Ukraine-Russia conflict as significant and “closely coordinated” with Washington.

In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday the launch of a humanitarian operation to evacuate the residents of Mariupol who wish, in cooperation with Greece and Turkey, with negotiations on the project underway.
