Ukrainian official accuses Russian forces of interfering in plant inspection

A Ukrainian presidential adviser on Thursday accused Russian forces of trying to disrupt a visit by United Nations (UN) nuclear inspectors to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant by bombing the nearby town of Enerhodar.

“The Russians bombed Enerhodar and the ZNPP territory [Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant]” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. “They want to disrupt the IAEA mission visit [Agência Internacional de Energia Atômica]. These are the actions of a terrorist state, which fears the world will know the truth.”

Bombing has been underway on Enerhodar since Thursday morning, according to regional officials based in Ukraine and Russia, while an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team traveled to the plant for a planned inspection of the facility in Southeast Ukraine, which has been taken over by Russian forces since March.

“It is Russia that is responsible for everything that happens in ZNPP and Enerhodar. Criminals must be stopped,” Yermak said.

THE CNN failed to independently verify both sides’ claims about the bombing near the facility. THE CNN contacted the IAEA regarding any obstacles or safety issues on its pre-arranged route to the plant, but received no response.

Leaving for the Zaporizhzhia city plant on Thursday, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the mission will persevere despite the “inherent risks” his monitoring team will face.
