Ukrainian Orthodox Church changes calendar in move to distance itself from Russia

Its Orthodox Church Ukrainian announced she is changing her calendar, in a move that distances her from Russia.

Ukrainian Christians, the majority of whom are Orthodox, traditionally celebrated Christmas on January 7 along with other mainly Orthodox Christian countries such as Russia, which invaded Ukraine last year.

“This question has arisen with new momentum as a result of Russia’s aggression,” she wrote in a Facebook post. Ukrainian Orthodox Church (OEO) announcing the change from the Julian calendar.

“In today’s time, the Julian calendar is perceived as related to the culture of the Russian Church,” the statement said.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has announced that it will use the Revised Julian calendar from September 1st, the start of the operating year. It also states that parishes will have the option of celebrating a feast according to the old Julian calendar.
