Ukrainian pilots have started to receive training on F-16 fighters in several European Union countries, according to the bloc’s high representative, Josep Borrell.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for allies for the aircraft as Kiev seeks to improve its defenses against Russian air strikes.
Speaking on the way to a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels on Tuesday, Borrell said the training “will take time, but the sooner the better”.
While the idea was initially met with reluctance by Ukraine’s allies, Borrell said the door is now open for supplying jets and expects an outcome similar to the Leopard 2 tank donation, which also went through a period of uncertainty. .
At the start of talks on sending the German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev, Borrell said many countries were “reluctant”. But “in the end,” he added, “comes the decision to provide this military support because it is absolutely necessary for Ukraine to continue to defend itself.”
