Ukrainian refugee children in Germany prepare to celebrate Easter

Displaced by the Russian invasion, Ukrainian refugee children in Germany begin to prepare to celebrate Easter, a sigh of normalcy amid the chaos of the war that has lasted more than 45 days.

The Slawia Cultural Center in eastern Germany has been helping some of the more than 300,000 Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Germany since late February.

This week, Ukrainian children, some accompanied by their mothers, decorated and painted Easter eggs, celebrated next Sunday (17). Some of the children prepared baskets and packaging for the sweets.

Launched in 2001, the Cultural Center is a local initiative that helps immigrants from Slavic countries such as Croatia, Poland and Serbia. Due to the Russian invasion, the project has received a much larger number of Ukrainians at the moment.

According to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), more than 4.5 million people have left Ukraine since the beginning of the war. According to Germany’s Interior Ministry, the country has already registered 316,453 refugees from Ukraine, most of them elderly, children and women.
