Ukrainian refugees flee conflict and find shelter in Brazil

A group of 50 refugees from Ukraine arrive in Brazil next Saturday (26). The information was confirmed to CNN by the First Baptist Church of Curitiba, Paraná. The headquarters is responsible for the arrival of foreigners.

Citizens leave the country because of the conflicts with Russia, which have been going on for more than three weeks. The expectation, according to Pastor Elias Dantas, is that the arrival will take place at one of the airports in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, depending on the availability of the international air network. Soon after, people will be taken by bus to Curitiba.

The action is part of a plan organized by an international entity, the Global Kingdom Partnership Network. The GKPN brings together several churches around the world, including the First Baptist Church of Curitiba.

Last Friday (18), another wave of 31 Ukrainians landed on Brazilian soil. Men, women and children with humanitarian visas were housed in a hotel. The reception is being done with the support of the Baptist Association of Social Action (ABASC), which has offered food, lodging and travel to the newcomers.

The program for refugees also includes tours around the region and gifts. Chocolates with the words “Welcome! You are very precious and loved. Feel welcomed!” were distributed on arrival.

In the coming days, part of the group will be destined for the municipalities of Guarapuava and Prudentopolis, in the interior of the state. Prudentopolis is the city with the largest Ukrainian community in Brazil.

ABASC is also collecting donations and bringing together English and Ukrainian translators to help with communication.

The war in Eastern Europe started on February 24th. So far, data from the United Nations (UN) estimate that more than three million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
