Taiwan’s President Tsai Ying-wen today condemned Russia for sending troops to breakaway regions in Ukraine and said the Ukrainian crisis was being used to undermine morale on the island, which had long been under threat of a Chinese invasion.
Self-governing democratic Taiwan is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine as China claims national sovereignty over the island and has vowed to seize it one day – using force if necessary.
Beijing has stepped up military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan since Tsai Ying-wen came to power in 2016, rejecting the position that the island is Chinese territory.
“Our government condemns Russia ‘s violation of Ukraine’ s national sovereignty … and calls on all parties involved to continue to resolve their differences through peaceful and reasonable means,” Chai said.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced last year that China is conducting a disinformation campaign aimed at occupying the island “unarmed”.
Chai today called on military units and national security units to remain vigilant and increase surveillance of military activity around Taiwan.
The last quarter of 2021 saw a sharp increase in violations by Chinese fighter jets in Taiwan’s anti-aircraft defense zone.
Last year, Taiwan recorded 969 such violations, according to a database compiled by AFP – more than double the number of nearly 380 recorded in 2020.
Beijing is cautious about the Ukrainian crisis, but offers support to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
