Ukrainian woman confronts Boris Johnson over Russia sanctions

During a press conference held on Tuesday (01) in Warsaw, Poland, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was confronted by a Ukrainian woman about the effectiveness of the sanctions applied by the United Kingdom against Russia.

“Because NATO is not willing to defend us. Because NATO is afraid of the 3rd World War, but it has already started. And it’s the Ukrainian children who are there, suffering the blow,” said the activist.

Boris Johnson thanked the demonstration, but said the UK could not do enough to meet their demands. In his speech, Johnson reiterated that British troops will not be sent to fight on Ukrainian territory.

Since Vladimir Putin authorized the military operation in Ukraine, the UK has already announced sanctions on Russia, especially related to the economy – with asset freezing and support for banning Russian banks from the Swift system. The nation has also announced that it will ban the export of certain items to the country.

The British prime minister is today on a trip to Eastern Europe, having arrived in Poland in the morning and, after meeting with the Polish prime minister, left for Estonia.

“If Putin thinks he will be able to corner NATO with these attacks, he is dead wrong. With that, what he is doing is fortifying NATO and the West,” said the prime minister.

Johnson also announced that the UK is available to take in around 200,000 Ukrainians fleeing the war.
