Brazilian organizations hosting refugees from Ukraine already plan for foreigners to stay in the country for at least one year. The team meets this week to define their future on national territory.
The leader of the Baptist Social Action Association (ABASC), Martha Zimmerman, informed the CNN that the objective is to guarantee the sustenance of these people with the help of donations.
After the adaptation period, the idea is for citizens to be inserted into the labor market. ABASC is one of the organizations responsible for welcoming Ukrainians in Brazil.
So far, there are 29 people under the care of the First Baptist Church of Curitiba, Paraná. Another 50 are scheduled to disembark later this week. The headquarters is part of the Global Kingdom Partnership Network, which brings together churches from different countries. GKPN is responsible for bringing families from Eastern Europe.
The first refugees landed on Brazilian soil last Friday (18) and were allocated in the capital of Paraná. During the weekend, they were welcomed with worship, medical care, sightseeing, leisure activities and even massages.
The main concern of religious entities was with the psychological state that Ukrainian families would reach after witnessing bombings and abandonment of their homes.
The group received new clothes, hygiene kits, bed and bath, medicines and chocolates. The youngest received toys and participated in an afternoon of games with other Brazilian children. Most foreigners are women and children.
This Sunday (20), the Ukrainians were transferred to Guarapuava, located just over 250 kilometers from Curitiba. The next destination is the city of Prudentópolis – a municipality that has the largest community of immigrants and descendants of Ukrainians in the country.
New wave of refugees
Next Saturday (26), another 50 Ukrainians arrive in Brazil. Landing must take place at one of the airports in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo.
According to the Presbyterian pastor Elias Dantas, the landing depends on the availability of an international air network. At the head of the GKPN, the project coordinator is the one who is organizing the details of the trip.
Like the first group, the refugees must go to Paraná soon afterwards. The forecast is that the arrival will take place during the morning and, on the next day, the transfer to Guarapuava will be carried out.
Dantas highlights that, with the help of the faithful, it has been possible to recover the dignity of refugees as a result of the conflict with Russia. “Some will stay in Curitiba, others will go to the countryside. They are wonderful people, good people, wonderful and suffering. When it’s all over, we’ll bring the families together and bring in the husbands,” he says.
