Ukrainians live in ‘hell’ and Russians pay ‘high price’, says UN Secretary-General

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, made statements on Tuesday (22) classifying what Ukrainians live as “hell” and condemning again the Russian attacks on Ukraine.

“Ukrainians are living hell, in addition to suffering from problems that are getting worse in relation to prices and food shortages that may happen in the near future,” Guterres said in New York, United States.

For the secretary, despite Russia now paying “a high price” for the invasion – due to the economic impacts of sanctions imposed by Western countries and companies -, it is necessary for the war to leave “from the battlefield to the table of discussions” at this time. , evaluated.

“There is a lot on the table for us to discuss and wrap up these activities now. This war has to go from the battlefield to the table of discussions. How many more lives will be lost, how many bombs will fall, how many Mariupol’s will be destroyed?”, he criticized.

Mariupol, the city mentioned by Guterres, has been one of the main targets of the Russians since the beginning of the war, on 24 February. A new escape route for civilians besieged at the scene failed to get off the ground over the weekend.

The Russian attacks led to a complete breakdown in basic services – with residents without access to gas, electricity or water.

A city official said people are afraid to leave their underground shelters even to pick up essentials, meaning they are trying to drink less water and eat less food, only going out to prepare hot meals.
