Ukrainian polar explorers met an elephant seal in Antarctica. This was announced on Facebook by a member of the 25th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition Yevhen Prokopchuk.
According to Prokopchuk, polar explorers are well aware of Weddell seals, they often meet crabeater seals at the Vernadsky station, and during their trips they almost always see fur seals and sometimes leopard seals.
“And sometimes we even see the southern elephant seal. Like, for example, today. This young seal was calm and did not pay attention to us,” the polar explorer wrote.

REFERENCE… Elephant seals are a family of true seals. They are called so because of the proboscis nose in males and their large size. Males can reach 6.5 meters, females – 3.5. Elephant seals weigh up to four tons or more.
