Ultrabook with a 90 Hz screen and a lightweight transformer with OLED: Huawei has updated the MateBook line

Huawei has prepared powerfully for the MWC 2022 exhibition in Barcelona (Spain) and brought several new interesting computers there at once. As part of today’s presentation, the flagship ultrabook MateBook X Pro 2022 with many innovations and the brand’s first compact convertible tablet called MateBook E, running on a full-fledged Windows 11 operating system, were presented.

MateBook X Pro 2022

The MateBook X Pro 2022 features a 14.2-inch IPS LCD touch display with a resolution of 3120×2080 pixels (3.1K). The panel offers TÜV Rheinland certification, a 3:2 aspect ratio, 500 cd/m² peak brightness, DisplayHDR 400, and a boosted 90Hz refresh rate – the Chinese manufacturer claims it’s the best screen it’s ever put into a branded laptop. Full coverage of the DCI-P3 color space is also declared. The thin top frame even managed to accommodate the front camera with HD 720p resolution.

The hardware of the MateBook X Pro 2022 is based on an Intel Core i7-1195G7 (Rocket Lake generation) processor with an integrated Iris Xe graphics accelerator. In the top configuration, the laptop received 16 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and a high-speed solid-state drive with a capacity of 1 TB. The improved Shark Fin cooling system consists of three air intakes, two fans and a large copper plate with heat pipes. Huawei claims that the airflow has increased by 60% and the overall efficiency of the heat dissipation module has increased by 100%.

The novelty comes with six high-quality Huawei Sound speakers, a Free Touch smart touchpad with gesture control and a 90W gallium nitride charger (15 minutes of charging provides 3 hours of use). Ports include four USB-C (two of them the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard) for data transfer, charging and output to an external monitor via DisplayPort and a 3.5mm headphone jack. With impressive characteristics, the MateBook X Pro 2022 case turned out to be quite small: 6 mm at its thinnest point, 15.5 mm at its thickest and weighing 1.38 kg.

The MateBook Pro X 2022 is priced at €1,899.

MateBook E

The MateBook E is a portable productivity tablet that transforms into a laptop with a keyboard case. The device weighs only 709 grams and has an impressive thickness of 7.9mm. The body frame is made of magnesium alloy, the back panel is made of carbon fiber with a textured surface. With the MateBook E, Huawei intends to compete with Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

The MateBook E is based, like the MateBook X Pro 2022, on 11-generation Intel Core processors with Iris Xe graphics. Announced models running Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7. The amount of RAM is 8 GB or 16 GB (LPDDR4X), as storage is a PCIe NVMe SSD – a choice of 256 GB or 512 GB. Peripheral interfaces have fallen victim to compactness, the number of ports is two: USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 support (it is also used for charging) and a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones.

As for the screen, the MateBook E is 12.6 inches and is made using OLED technology, which means a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. The resolution is 2560×1600 (Quad HD+), the brightness is 600 cd/m². Coverage of the DCI-P3 color space is also 100%. Among other things, the MateBook E supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. Autonomy is provided by a 42 Wh battery, charging is carried out from a complete 65 W power supply. The transformer has four speakers and four microphones, and there is also support for the second-generation Huawei M-Pencil magnetic stylus with 4,096 degrees of pressure and a response of 2 ms.

The MateBook E starts at €649 for the Core i3 variant (8GB RAM, 128GB storage). The Core i5 version (8 GB RAM, 256 GB ROM) will cost 999 euros. When buying an older configuration on a Core i5 or Core i7 (16 GB RAM, 512 GB ROM) for 1,199 euros and 1,399 euros, respectively, the Smart Magnetic Keyboard magnetic keyboard cover will be free.
