United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), a major semiconductor manufacturer, announced that its board of directors has approved a plan to build a new manufacturing facility in Singapore adjacent to its existing Fab12i 300mm wafer factory. The first phase of the new factory, designed to produce products according to the standards of 22 and 28 nm, will have a capacity of 30,000 wafers per month. The start of production is expected at the end of 2024.
The new factory (Fab12i P3) is said to be one of the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Singapore. The planned investment in this project is $5 billion. UMC has been operating in Singapore for more than 20 years, having not only a production facility here, but also a specialized research and development center in the field of advanced technologies. With the expansion of Fab12i, the company’s 2022 capex budget will be revised upwards to $3.6 billion.
The announcement of the plans to build a new factory noted that customers have already signed multi-year supply agreements with UMC, confirming the forecast of strong demand in the coming years for products manufactured using UMC’s 22nm and 28nm technology. The factory will specialize in embedded high-voltage devices, embedded non-volatile memory, RF and mixed signal processing ICs for a wide range of applications, including smartphones, smart home devices and automotive electronics. The company expects the factory to play an important role in meeting the growing demand in these markets and help alleviate capacity shortages.
