UN: 70% of Gaza will not have access to drinking water by the end of the day

The main United Nations aid agency operating in Gaza warned this Wednesday (15) that “its entire operation is now on the brink of collapse”.

The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA), Philippe Lazzarini, warned “by the end of today, around 70% of the population in Gaza will not have access to clean water,” in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

UNRWA is housing around 780,000 people in more than 150 overcrowded facilities after basic services stopped functioning. Yesterday, the agency said that a total of 102 UNRWA aid workers had been killed and 27 others injured in Gaza since the start of Israel’s war with Hamas.

“Having fuel only for trucks will not save more lives. Waiting any longer will cost lives,” added Lazzarini.

Israeli air strikes in response to Hamas’ attack on Israel more than a month ago have killed more than 11,000 people, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah, citing medical sources in Hamas-controlled territory. A fuel blockade has resulted in a widening humanitarian crisis, with hospitals, water systems, bakeries and other electricity-dependent services shut down.
