Although following the situation of the war in Ukraine, the United Nations (UN), whose objective is to maintain international peace and security, has not acted directly to resolve the crisis. In an interview with CNNProfessor of International Relations at the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM) Gunther Rudzit explained the role of the organization.
“The UN has no will of its own. The UN is what member states make of it. So decisions are not made, because governments don’t want to make that decision, precisely because, many times, they don’t have any direct interest involved,” she said.
As the fighting in the region progresses, the number of victims grows. According to the UN, more than 900 civilians have died in the country since the beginning of the invasion. On Tuesday (22), according to the Ukrainian government, a Russian attack on a train station killed one person and derailed 15 carriages.
“These are not cold numbers, just the number of dead, but really the life situation that the population has to live with”, evaluated Rudzit about the impact of the war.
Currently, at least 26 countries are experiencing armed conflicts involving partisan, military or militia organizations, according to the Council on International Relations. Many of them end up not attracting as much global attention as the current conflict in Eastern Europe.
“You have these forgotten conflicts there, which are not at the center of more economically developed regions, which draw so much attention, and end up being forgotten”, said the expert.
