UN agency: Israel will no longer approve sending food to northern Gaza

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said on Sunday (24) that Israel has informed the UN that it will no longer approve the agency's food convoys to northern Gaza.

“This is outrageous and makes the obstruction of vital assistance during a man-made famine intentional. These restrictions must be lifted,” said UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini on Platform X.

UNRWA, which provides assistance and services to Palestinian refugees in Gaza and across the region, has been in crisis since Israel accused twelve of its employees of involvement in the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7.

The allegations have led UNRWA's largest donor, the United States, and some others to suspend funding, casting the agency's future into doubt. However, other countries, including Canada, Australia and Sweden, have already returned funding.

UNRWA and Egypt said last week that Lazzarini, who was visiting Cairo, was blocked from entering Gaza by Israeli authorities.

“By preventing UNRWA from fulfilling its mandate in Gaza, the clock will move faster toward famine and many more will die from hunger, dehydration and lack of shelter,” Lazzarini added.
