In an interview with CNNthis Wednesday (2), the spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Luiz Fernando Godinho, explained the agency’s humanitarian actions to the more than 900,000 refugees who have already left Ukraine after the invasion of Russian military forces. .
The UN estimates that more than 4 million people could leave Ukraine.
“We have the updated number yesterday that speaks of 874,000 people who have already left Ukraine for western countries in Europe. But there is additional information about 96,000 people who crossed to the other side, towards the Russian federation”, said Godinho.
The UNHCR spokesperson told CNN that the group is present in all countries close to Ukraine, and highlighted the support of both the country’s authorities and society.
“We are present in all countries in the neighborhood region, providing support. Emergency actions are being focused on sheltering these people and distributing basic necessities, such as mattresses, blankets, hygiene items, all kinds of items that people need to receive at first”, he said.
“The hope of these people is always the expectation of being able to return, but that will depend on the security conditions inside Ukraine, and we have to prepare for a situation that could last a long time,” he added.
