The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in South America called on the authorities to carry out a “prompt and thorough investigation” into the death of Genivaldo Jesus Santos, 38, during a police procedure in Sergipe. Videos shared on social media show the PRF vehicle being used as a “gas chamber”, with the victim trapped in the trunk.
“Genivaldo de Jesus dos Santos was a 38-year-old black man, with a disability, who died after an approach by the Federal Highway Police last Wednesday [25]”, highlights the note.
The request to the authorities reinforces that international human rights standards are complied with and that the responsible agents are brought to justice, in order to promote reparation to the victim’s next of kin.
The federal highway police, responsible for the approach that ended with the death of Genivaldo were removed last Thursday (26).
“Disproportionate police violence will not stop until the authorities take definitive action to combat it, such as prosecuting and effectively punishing any human rights violations committed by state actors, to prevent impunity,” said Jan Jarab, regional head of the office. of the UN for Human Rights in South America.
Jarab added that Genivaldo’s death came two years after the death of George Floyd in the United States, a case that triggered a wave of protests and attention to systemic and police racism around the world.
The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres, said that he ordered the opening of an investigation by the Federal Police and the PRF itself to investigate the case. The Civil Police also opened an investigation. The initial report of the Instituto Medico-Legal confirmed the death by asphyxia and respiratory failure.
