UN: Calls for independent inquiry into images of dead civilians in Bouka

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “shocked” by the images of dead citizens in Bouka, this small town of Kiev where many bodies of civilians were found after the withdrawal of Russian forces.

In a laconic statement, Guterres said “it is essential that an independent inquiry lead to accountability” of those responsible.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, for its part, noted that the location of the mass graves in Bouka raises “serious questions” about the commission of “possible war crimes” and stressed the importance of preserving all evidence. “We are not yet able to comment on the causes and circumstances of the deaths of civilians in Bouka but what we know so far raises serious questions and concerns about possible war crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law,” he said.
