UN calls for “withdrawal of foreign troops and mercenaries” from Libya

The UN Security Council, in a statement adopted unanimously on Friday, called for “the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries from the LibyaWelcoming the vote of confidence in the Libyan parliament on Wednesday by the transitional government.

“The Security Council calls on all parties to fully implement the (October 23rd) ceasefire agreement and urges the Member States to respect and support the full implementation of the agreement,” the statement said.

According to UN, about 20,000 soldiers and mercenaries were still in Libya at the end of 2020 and so far no withdrawal moves have been observed.

“The Security Council urges all Member States to fully respect the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on the basis of relevant Security Council resolutions,” the statement said.

This embargo, which has been in place since 2011, has been regularly violated for years, according to UN experts in charge of monitoring compliance.

The next annual report of the UN experts is expected in the coming days. In the past, they have denounced the presence in Libya of Russian mercenaries, Turkish soldiers and armed groups consisting of nationals of Syria, Chad and Sudan.
