UN chief calls for full transparency in Venezuela elections

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for full transparency in Venezuela’s elections and encouraged the publication of election results and an analysis by polling station, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Monday (29).

“The secretary-general calls for full transparency and encourages the timely publication of election results and breakdown by polling station,” Dujarric told reporters.

The spokesperson added that Guterres called for restraint from political leaders and their supporters, that all electoral disputes must be addressed and resolved peacefully and that electoral authorities must carry out their work independently and without interference.

“The Secretary-General commends the Venezuelan people for their determination to express their will peacefully through the ballot box. We take note of the announcement made by the electoral authorities, as well as the concerns expressed by political actors and members of the international community,” Dujarric said.

“He recalls that electoral authorities must carry out their work independently and without interference to ensure the free expression of the will of the electorate,” the spokesperson added.

Electoral council proclaims Maduro president

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as president of Venezuela for a new term on Monday (29), one day after the country’s presidential elections.

Maduro’s new term in power will be between 2025 and 2031.

The CNE result indicates that Maduro won with 51.2% of the votes against 44.2% for Edmundo González.

Opposition denounces fraud

The opposition group that united against the candidacy of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said there was fraud in the election in which he was re-elected for a third term.

According to opponents, Edmundo González won with around 70% of the votes.
