UN chief warns against use of civilian objects in military operations

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned against the dangerous trend of using civilian objects in military operations at a press conference at UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday (18).

Explosions of wireless communications devices in Lebanon have resulted in dozens of deaths and thousands of injuries in recent days.

At the press conference, when asked whether this could set a dangerous precedent for future war, Guterres said: “Indeed, I think it is very important that there is effective control of civilian objects, not to arm civilian objects. This should be a rule that governments everywhere in the world should be able to implement.”

In a statement on Tuesday (17), Hezbollah accused Israel of being “fully responsible for the criminal aggression that also targeted civilians,” threatening retaliation. Israel has yet to comment on the explosions.

Tensions along the Lebanon–Israel border escalated on October 8, 2023, following a battery of rockets launched by Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas’ attack the previous day. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

On Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that Israel is “at the beginning of a new stage of the war” against Hezbollah.
