The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today expressed concern over plans by pro-Russian authorities to try Ukrainian prisoners of war in Mariupol, possibly in the coming days, noting that the process itself may constitute a war crime.
“We are very concerned about the way it is being done. There are pictures in the media of cells being set up in the philharmonic hall in Mariupol, really huge cells, and apparently the aim is to lock the prisoners there,” UNHCR spokeswoman Ravina Samdasani said. .
“This is unacceptable, it is humiliating,” he underlined, adding that the deliberate deprivation of prisoners of war’s right to a fair trial is a war crime.
