The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that a new operation to evacuate civilians stranded in Mariupol and other communities was completed on Wednesday (4).
“Once again, our United Nations team and colleagues at the International Committee of the Red Cross worked together to bring people who wanted to leave areas of hostility to security, with the agreement of the parties to the conflict,” said Osnat Lubrani, Coordinator UN humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
More than 300 civilians from Mariupol and the neighboring cities of Manhush, Berdiansk, Tokmak and Vasylivka were taken to Zaporizhzhia, where they received humanitarian assistance.
“Many came with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, and now we will support them through this difficult time, including much-needed psychological support,” Lubrani said.
This was the second evacuation of civilians from areas in Mariupol coordinated by the UN and the Red Cross. Last weekend, more than 100 civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal steelworks and arrived safely in Zaporizhzhia.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 344 people in total had been evacuated from the Mariupol region.
