The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said today that it had confirmed 1,424 civilian casualties since the conflict in Ukraine began two weeks ago – 516 killed and 908 injured – but believed the numbers were “much higher”.
The death toll among civilians rose to 1,335 yesterday, Tuesday – 474 civilians were killed and 861 wounded – after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.
Most of the civilian casualties were caused by explosive devices, the agency said today. Updates on civilian casualties from the cities of Volnovacha, Mariupol and Izium are in the process of being confirmed amid allegations of hundreds of civilian casualties, he added.
